Current Position and how long

Communications Manager - 3.5 years

Other experience: Professional, communications, education or anything else you'd like to share

I have enjoyed a 30-year career working in nonprofit/university communications, marketing, and fundraising. Employers included, among others, St. Scholastica (Duluth), Great Lakes Aquarium (Duluth), Minnesota International Center (Mpls), Tubman Family Alliance (now, Tubman in Mpls), University of MN-Twin Cities, Special Libraries Association (D.C.), and UW-Superior. I also provided consultation services for, among other clients, cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, Conflict Resolution Center (Mpls.), Accentucare (home care business start up in Duluth), Twin Cities International Citizens Awards program (Twin Cities), Women's Advocates (St. Paul), and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (Duluth).

I have been an individual/organizational member of Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, Visit Saint Paul, Association of Fundraising Professionals, 3CMA, Council for Advancement and Support of Education, Public Relations Society of America, and International Association of Business Communicators. In addition, I have served on the boards of YWCA-Duluth, Washington Women in Public Relations (Washington D.C.), and the Volunteer Attorney Program (Duluth).

Why do you want to be a Minnesota Association of Government Communicators board member?

I have enjoyed my time as a member of MAGC and am interested in giving back by sharing my talents and skills honed over 30 years in nonprofit/government communications. Representing western Wisconsin (4-year resident), I can help expand the organization (if that is of interest); we could sure use a professional communicators group on this side of the St. Croix! I have spent many years working and living in the Twin Cities and Duluth, so I know some about the geography and politics of the state. Not lastly, I would be very interested in meeting and getting to know my peers as a volunteer for this important, forward-thinking organization.

What qualities and attributes will you bring to the organization?

Professionalism, team player, excellent planning and implementation skills, out-of-the-box thinking, enthusiasm, work ethic, and passion for relationship-building.

What do you consider to be the major issues facing government communicators today?

Crisis communications, citizen engagement, ever-changing technologies, social media challenges and opportunities, climate change, competing priorities.
